Repurpose and Reuse an Old Cutting Board Project

Turn an old cutting board you no longer use or bought at a garage sale into kitchen decor.

I slapped nutmeg and antique white on for the background then painted simple shapes with antique, tomato red, latte (wings), orange and finally green acrylic paint.

With a liner brush, I loosely outlined the rooster with black.

It takes very little time most of which was consumed by waiting for the paint to dry.

Upcycle or Repurpose Wood to Primitive Folk Snowman Plaque Sign

When I find wood laying around I can't resist picking it up to repurpose or upcycle into something more than what it is.

With Christmas right around the corner and the two stores in which I consign my art in need of Christmas gifts and decor, the most logical destiny for the wood plank or slat from an old crate was a Christmas themed sign.

Acrylic paint: Black, Antique White, Avocado Green, Barn Red, Orange

I don't bother sealing the wood but you can to conserve paint.

Lay in the black and white checks first, let dry.

Float a shadow along the outside edge with diluted black.

Paint the red section of the stocking using multiple layers until thoroughly covered.

Let dry between layers.

With avocado green, paint the top, toe and heel of the stocking. Use just one layer of paint for the top of the stocking because you're going to paint the snowman's head. It will take less white to cover the green top edge should you need to.

Let dry then paint the head of the snowman in multiple layers until the wood is thoroughly covered.

Note: So I don't have to type it out with each step, practice this standing instruction: Allow layers to dry before adding to them or painting a different color next to another.

Once the head of the snowman is painted and dry, paint the face details and add avocado green to the top of the stocking until it's completely covered.

Add the hat and keep adding to the dry paint until the wood is completely covered.

Add the word "Snow", the simple snowflakes (or stars) and other details like stitching and lines.

Float diluted black around the inside edges of the red.

Tip: Always work from the background to foreground when painting.

To hang: I drilled two holes in the top from the front to the back, poked wire through the holes and twisted the wire closed.

Repurpose or Upcylce Old Wooden Frame and Flatware Fork

After searching for ideas to repurpose or upcycle old picture frames and flatware, and finding nothing new or exciting I came up with this brilliant idea.

Easily change out the photo or card to create new instantly framed art for home decor.

What you'll need:

1. Old wood picture frame. You'll want it big enough to attach a fork.
2. Small wood screws with heads large enough to cover the edges of the fork.
3. Drill and bit that is smaller than the wood screw.
4. Fork.
5. Scrap fabric (or use ribbon you have laying around).
6. Pencil, marker, pen or something to mark with.

Pound the fork flat with a hammer on a hard surface. I sometimes lay a folded paper towel on top of the fork if I'm concerned about hammer marks. In this instance, I wasn't concerned.

Bend the two middle tines back a bit to make it easier to insert a photo or card.

Find the horizontal middle of the bottom of the frame. Here, I eyeballed the middle while moving the fork up and down to find the height I wanted to not only hold a horizontal picture but a vertical picture or card, as well.

Note: I liked the color and appearance of this frame so didn't bother with painting it or changing it's original appearance.

With a pencil or marker, make a mark on both sides of the fork where you will drill and add screws. Drill pilot holes then partially screw down the screws.

Slide the fork between the screws and while holding in place completely tighten the screws.

I used Liquid Nails to glue my scrap material bow in place.

You may have to move the hanger on the back if you made a vertical frame into a horizontal one (or vice-versa).

Freshening Up an Old Mirror

Take an old, vintage or antique mirror and freshen it up with paint.

Paints you'll need:
Black and metallic gold paint (acrylic paint in this case) for the frame.

Sage green and bright red enamel paints for glass and mirrors.

What to do:
FRAME

• Sand the mirror frame while wearing a mask. LEAD PAINT is dangerous to your lungs.

No need to sand it to bare wood; sand just enough to remove loose paint.

• Wipe with a slightly dampened rag or paper towel to remove dust and loose paint.
• Paint the entire frame black and let dry. Speed up drying with a blow dryer if you wish
• Paint on the metallic gold. Here I applied it along and inside decorative grooves. Let dry.

I lightly sanded off some of the paint to roughen the look a bit since the original paint was pitted.

MIRROR GLASS

• Clean with vinegar and water then wipe dry.
• Use a clean paper towel dampened with alcohol and wipe the mirror glass.

No need to wipe dry

• Using the art brush of your choice (script, angled, flat 1/4 inch) and green enamel paint for glass, paint the vine and leaves.
• Let dry.
• Using the handle of a brush, dip into the red enamel and randomly apply dots (berries) around the vine. I preferred the larger handle to make bigger dots but small ones would work too.

That's it. This mirror set a few days to dry and cure before I took it to Glasgow Trading Post in Glasgow, MO, to sell.

Maple Wooden Wine Bottle Holder with Lighted Wine Bottle

With a little time and the right tools, you can easily create this rustic maple wood bottle stand or holder with Christmas lights.

I used a piece of maple from a limb of a dead tree my brother cut. It had to set for a few months but the outcome provides a nice rustic look for home decor.

Do not center the hole in the wood. If  you do, the weight of the bottle will topple the entire piece backward.

Start above the center and create a series of holes by drilling several at a (approximate) 45 degree angle making sure the circumference is large enough to accommodate the top of the bottle.

With a Dremel, we finished cutting the hole and added a small groove on the bottom back of the wood piece with a cutter bit then sanded with a sanding bit to smooth the edges (and - of course - to make marketable since we're selling this piece on ebay).

Using 100 grit sand paper, we sanded the top and back of the wooden bottle stand.

We didn't touch the outside since it's beautiful as is. We simply applied three coats of furniture oil to bring out the color and grain.

We washed the bottle and removed the label, let dry then inserted a string of 30-count Christmas lights, making sure to run the cord in the groove we made earlier.

This project didn't even take up an entire day to create once the wood was dry.
