Primitive Grunge Pumpkins Project out of White Material

Very easy to make are primitive grunge pumpkins for Halloween or Thanksgiving decorations using:
  • an old white sheet or pillow case
  • jute twine or string
  • acrylic paint
Using the large pumpkin for the example:

Pumpkin:

Measure and cut 2 pieces 8 inches wide by 16 inches tall.

Make any size by doubling the second measurement i.e. 5x10, 6x12, etc.

Starting with a long side, sew down then across the short bottom and back up the other long side.

Three sides are now sewn.

Turn right side out so the seams are now inside.

Loosely stuff.

Gather the top (bunch it up) and hand sew closed.

I used a large flat brush to paint and really  loaded the paint brush with paint.

Paint with an orange shade of your choice one side at a time because you need to lay it down to dry.

Allow to dry.

Paint the other side.

Allow to dry.

Paint the top and bottom.

After it's dry, wrap jute twine around one side pulling the string to create creases. Cut the string but make sure you leave yourself two tails to tie.

Repeat around the other side.

I didn't cut the ends back after tying. I left them long.

Stem:

1 1/2 inches wide by 2 1/2 inches tall

While the pumpkin is drying, stitch three sides of the stem leaving a short side open.

Turn right side out so seams are inside.

Loosely stuff.

Paint green.

Once dry, hand sew to the top of the pumpkin.

I added more grunge with nutmeg color acrylic.

Complete the look by grunging a small taper candle with nutmeg color acrylic paint and cinnamon.

Thanks so much for stopping by!

Turn a Candle into Cinnamon Spice Candle

Buy a candle then create your own rustic, homemade-look cinnamon coated candle.

And, it will burn safely because the acrylic is water base.

So easy!

WHAT YOU NEED:
Candle - any size or color
Acrylic paint in brown hue
Paint brush
Candle holder to hold the candle while it dries
Ground cinnamon, nutmeg, clove or other ground spice

INSTRUCTIONS: Paint the candle, put into candle holder and let dry. Don't get carried away with brush strokes, pressing hard on the brush or repeatedly going over the wet paint.

Add a thick, heavy second coat.

While it's still wet, begin sprinkling the cinnamon over the candle.

Be sure to turn the candle once one side is covered and continue until the entire candle is coated in the spice.

Let dry.

That's it! That's all there is to this simple tutorial to create your own cinnamon spice covered rustic candle.

Repupose and Upcycle Old Cutting Boards

Taking things - discarded items nobody wants - and turning them into decorative and sometimes even useful items has become a challenging pastime.

For instance, take the two cutting boards pictured to the left. I considered turning them into shelves or even racks for towels or jackets but in the end decided to keep it simple by painting uncomplicated images on them.

A painted star and burning candle on the plain wood of this paddle cutting board was something I'd been considering for some time.

The stenciled star was painted in antique gold and is surrounded by burnt umber. Burnt umber was dry brushed along the inside edges of the star.

The candle stick consists of a straight line using barn red and a half-inch brush, a float of burnt umber on the left while on the right is dry brushed white. The flame was created using one stroke of antique white with yellow, orange and blue layered on top. A hint of a wick was added. Burnt umber, black or grey will work fine for it.

Lastly, antique white was dry brushed around the flame up into the bottom of the star.

The cat silhouette board was based with one layer of black wash then multiple layers and colors (nutmeg, gold then antique white) were slapped on with abandon to create a background for the silhouette.

The cat silhouette was painted using a flat one inch brush loaded with black. Basic shapes in multiple layers of black were used for all parts than a hint of a shadow using burnt umber was added along the right edge.

A hole was drilled at the center top of the board and a piece of scrap material was poked through and tied in a knot to be used as the hanger.

A simple day project to create simple, country primitive decor for you or as gifts.

Have fun!

Upcycle Wooden Pepper Mill and Salt Shaker into Lacey Victorian Candle Holders

Here's a crafty idea to repurpose (upcycle) trash-to-treasure and unusable wooden pepper mills and salt shakers. These pieces were found at a second hand store for a dollar. I have never done this project before but when I saw the pair I knew immediately what I'd create out of them.

With a bit of sandpaper they can be turned into shabby chic by simply sanding away the paint here and there.

What you'll need:
  • A wood pepper mill and salt shaker.
  • Antique white acrylic and a large brush.
  • 3x3 or 4x4 wood squares (or platforms of your choice. You could even use metal or hard sturdy plastic.).
  • Sandpaper.
  • Lace scraps or in this case, I used cuts from old, cheap lace curtains.
Remove the tops to both pieces and the metal workings inside the pepper mill. Lay aside for a future project.
Apply a small bead of wood glue, Liquid Nails or similar glue along the rims of the shaker and mill then let dry over night.

Sand the finish of the wood. This will help the paint to stick to the shaker and mill.

Now paint then let dry and paint again. It took several coats to completely cover these pieces.

Apply a small bead of glue around the edges of the squares then add the lace and let dry.

As I mentioned earlier, these pillar candle holders can be scuffed up to create a shabby-chic look.

Patriotic July 4th Indepence Day Crafts

Terra cotta pots: Paint primitive pictures like sheep, stars, crows, and simple Uncle Sam hats in red white and blue on terra cotta pots with acrylic.

Plant your favorite flower or plant then set it out on your porch or deck to add a bit of patriotic charm to the outside of your house.

Or, to give the inside of your house some old country primitive charm, add Styrofoam inside the pot, glue moss on top and add a wire curly cue to hold a picture then set on your coffee table of picture shelf.

Burlap and muslin candle jar wraps: Again using acrylic, paint primitive sheep, willow trees, Uncle Sam hats, barns, fences, out buildings and stars in patriotic red, white and blue. Then sew around the edges (shown are candle jar wraps with raw edges) and velcro at both ends then set around the house to mingle with your gorgeous antiques.

Old vintage (antique) window and frame: Using acrylic and the same patriotic colors to keep with my Forth of July theme, I painted trees, barn, out building and a hint of grass on one pane. Below it on the next pane of glass, I painted three very simple cat shapes with eyes. Change out with a piece of wall art you've grown weary of...
Jar: Take an empty jelly jar, free hand stripes, stencil in some stars, add a votive in a glass votive holder and you've got yourself a pretty candle holder to light up an Independence Day evening.

Note: For your glass projects, wipe down with alcohol and let dry. You'll need to paint several layers for the glass to look right so be sure to let the paint dry between coats.
