Primitive Owl Picture Art Decor Projects

Here are three primitive acrylic painted owl projects for your consideration.

Far left is an old plastic decorative plate I purchased at a garage sale for 10 cents. It took a bit more time than the other two decorative projects because of the multiple layers of paint but was well worth the effort. The edges of the main elements were outlined in black.

Center owl picture above: An unwanted book becomes table top decor. Stand it upright simply by opening the front and back covers. You can't get much simpler than this. Shapes, floated shadows and edges with only the slightest attention to detail are the ingredients to this recipe.

Finally, at the far right is a wall plaque made from an old piece of barn wood framed with leftover trim I found laying in the basement of my house. It was painted black before the three primitive owls were added. Again, these owls are basic shapes but the bottom two owls have big, sad eyes with three highlights.

The primary acrylic paint colors used: Antique white, teddy bear tan, avocado, ivy, barn red, nutmeg, honeycomb and - of course - black.

All owl decorative pieces will be for sale at Gramma Sophie's in Boonville, Missouri.

Please visit my online gift store, Visages. Below are a few examples of what you'll find.

This hand painted vintage metal cake carrier (holder or cover) was originally bare silver metal (tin, I wonder) when it was given to me by Donnie, owner of Glasgow Trading Post.

I used acrylic paint then sealed it with a water-base varnish more to protect the paint than anything but in the end the piece appears to be enamel coated.

If you tackle the project be prepared to use at least three layers of acrylic to base-coat it. But once you have it base-coated, depending on what element you're painting you can get away with using only one layer of paint.

The next
project - also given to me by Donnie - is a sponge cake pan also originally bare silver metal. Again, you'll have to base coat at least three layers.

Color was floated below the edge of the "icing" with dry brushed highlights on the "icing" to make it appear three dimensional and no other decorative elements were added. I wanted it to look like a cake setting out in the kitchen but it will also look good on a kitchen wall.

This piece was also finished with water-base varnish.

Note: Acrylic doesn't stick to metal as there is no adhesive in the paint. It's strictly water-base with pigment.

To help the paint to stick, you have the option of sanding to roughen the metal or using spray enamel paint as the base coat.

These items are for sale at Glasgow Trading Post in Glasgow, Missouri. Have fun with the two projects!

Acrylic Painted Primitive Country Christmas Snowman Screens

Grab a window screen, your acrylic paints and set to work creating primitive snowmen painted screen decorations.

Original designs but you're welcome to use the idea.

These are for sale at Glasgow Trading Post, Missouri.

Top left: Three happy snowmen in assorted hats and scarves in different colors.

Center left: Snowman in black top hat and blue scarf with snowflakes and the word "snow".

Bottom left: "Welcome" sign with snowflakes and cute snowman in a green scarf.

The three painted screens hang with eye screws and picture hanging wire.

Note: Be sure to drill holes with a bit that is smaller than the actual screw. This process keeps the wood from splitting. Old wood is brittle.

Acrylic paints were used then each screen was sprayed with a clear, protective coat that helps retard the paint from chipping.

Freshening Up an Old Mirror

Take an old, vintage or antique mirror and freshen it up with paint.

Paints you'll need:
Black and metallic gold paint (acrylic paint in this case) for the frame.

Sage green and bright red enamel paints for glass and mirrors.

What to do:
FRAME
  • Sand the mirror frame while wearing a mask. LEAD PAINT is dangerous to your lungs.
No need to sand it to bare wood; sand just enough to remove loose paint.
  • Wipe with a slightly dampened rag or paper towel to remove dust and loose paint.
  • Paint the entire frame black and let dry. Speed up drying with a blow dryer if you wish
  • Paint on the metallic gold. Here I applied it along and inside decorative grooves. Let dry.
I lightly sanded off some of the paint to roughen the look a bit since the original paint was pitted.

MIRROR GLASS
  • Clean with vinegar and water then wipe dry.
  • Use a clean paper towel dampened with alcohol and wipe the mirror glass.
No need to wipe dry
  • Using the art brush of your choice (script, angled, flat 1/4 inch) and green enamel paint for glass, paint the vine and leaves.
  • Let dry.
  • Using the handle of a brush, dip into the red enamel and randomly apply dots (berries) around the vine. I preferred the larger handle to make bigger dots but small ones would work too.
That's it. This mirror set a few days to dry and cure before I took it to Glasgow Trading Post in Glasgow, MO, to sell.

UpCycle Shelf, Pitcher and Metal American Eagle

It sometimes pays to take a good look at what someone has thrown out on the curb for the trash men to pick up.

Take this shelf with a towel bar. It's solid oak. What was wrong with it? The top had detached from the rest of the unit. I reattached it with glue and screws. (I had to drill holes for the wood screws because the wood is so hard.)

I painted it with black, midnight and burnt carmine which gave it a deep, dark wine color. I added the star then finished it off with varnish.

The ceramic pitcher was given to me by our next door neighbor who was getting rid of stuff in her basement. It had orange flowers and was personalized with the neighbor's last name. By accident I removed the orange flowers and name by simply washing. I got lucky.

Americana theme seemed most fitting because of the blue stripes in the preexisting glaze.

It is for decorative display only.

The American Eagle was found in the same trash heap as the oak shelves. I gave it a good washing then went over it with metallic gold acrylic then sprayed it with clear enamel.

All of these items were taken to Gramma Sophie's in Boonville, MO, where she is happily consigning them.

What to Paint on Old Wooden Bowls

Here are a few bits of inspiration if you're looking for designs to paint and decorate old wooden bowls you've grown tired of or found at a garage sale.

These bowls were assigned to me to decorate by Gramma Sophie's in Boonville, MO, where I have other items consigned.

NOTE: The bowls are meant for decoration only and are not to be used for food.

Preparation: I used 100 grit sandpaper to rough up the originally black in-and outsides of the bowls so the acrylic paint would adhere.

Both sides were then sprayed with a mixture of vinegar and water, and wiped clean and dry.

I painted a base color on the inside first, let dry and painted the outside also allowing it to dry. I think there are two to three coats on both sides. The colors were chosen for the owl bowls to represent 4th of July while the other bowl colors were my whims.

Owls: I loaded the owls' base colors onto a 1/2 inch brush then while using just the chisel edge from left to right, I made the "ear tufts" with a simple "u" shape then added a round body. After the paint dried, I filled in the wing shapes then added "feathers" once the wings dried.

The eyes were added with a small flat brush by pushing straight down and twirling the brush in a circle. The eye highlights were added by dipping the handle of the brush in white.

Curly Qs: The assorted colored curls were added using a liner brush tip.

I finished off by stenciling a star on the outside and spraying both interior and exterior with spray lacquer.
Preparation for dragonfly bowl: Same as above.

Dragonflies: Using a liner brush, I painted random loops for the wings.

The bodies were added using black in a bottle with a liner tip.

Preparation for  the bird house: Same as above.

Bird house: For the house, I laid in basic shapes in different colors. After the paint dried, I added the round holes in black by twirling a small flat brush dipped in black.

Shadows and highlights were added once the bird house dried.

White daisies, vines, leaves and berries were randomly added using a simple one-stroke method.

Finish: Again, I sprayed lacquer on both sides of the bowls to protect the paint.

Have fun! You're welcome to use my ideas.
